Why 'Mysteries' Of The Rosary?

by Kay
(Two Harbors, MN)

How do you explain why we call them 'Mysteries' of the Rosary to a non Catholic. I am going to show a non Catholic family how to say the Rosary and the 14 yr. old asked me why do you say "Mystery". I did not have a good reason. I had never even thought of that. Leave it to a non-Catholic to think of something like that. eh?

Why Called Mysteries
by: J.F. Archer

Maybe this will help.

I can see where this could be a good question to research properly for future use by all. It is a sad fact that some protestants will associate the word "mystery" in regards to the famous "Mystery of Babylon", who is considered in error by some to be the Catholic Church and/or anyone or anything associated with Her ("her" being another word that scares protestants). It shows the sad state of how our use of language, definitions and understanding of proper word context is often overlooked today.

Word usage (even in everyday conversations) in a literal sense is often a big problem when it comes to a Catholic attempting to explain the faith of the Church to a protestant. One must often be prepared to explain much, very slowly and with the realization that it may even be impossible to convince them of anything in one discussion (some individuals are "unteachable")--- Despite the great many reliable resources available, many protestants will continue believe Catholics are deceived as well as spiritually blind. The error is often preferred before truth due to bad information that exists.

Difficult To Understand Using Logic
by: The Rosary Team

Rosary mysteries are called such because they refer to the mysteries in the lives of Jesus and Mary.

Here the word mystery denotes a sacred event that is difficult to understand using logic.

All the works of Jesus are mysteries because He is God.

Because Mary is immaculate and the most pure of all God's creatures, the events in her life are also mysteries, events difficult to understand using logic.

Fourth Rosary Promise
The rosary will make virtue and good works flourish, and will obtain for souls the most abundant divine mercies. It will draw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
