When praying the rosary for the benefit of someone else, do I need to pray the entire rosary for them, or just one decade?

by Lisa
(Michigan)

I pray the rosary every morning when I wake up. I pray 1 of the mysteries (5 decades). I am told that the rosary should be prayed to help others who are in need of Jesus.

I have 3 family members who are in need of prayers. Must I pray an entire rosary (5 decades) after praying for each person by name. Or, can I pray for each person by name, ask the Blessed Mother to help them, and then pray 1 decade for them. Then, before praying the next decade, pray for the next person by name, ask the Blessed Mother to help the next person, and pray 1 decade for that person, and on and on.

I am very confused because I am told to pray the rosary for people in need. But I don't know if that means I must pray a rosary for each person.

Thanks for your help.

True Devotion To Mary
by: The Rosary Team

Dear Lisa,

The usual approach would be to list those for whom you are praying when you begin your Rosary.

We don’t have the definitive answer, but I would suggest reading True Devotion to Mary by St. Louis Marie deMontfort. In it he teaches the concept of spiritual slavery.

In order to grow spiritually, you need to detach yourself from your own will and give yourself over entirely to the Will of God. This detachment is necessary in prayer as a degree of spiritual perfection would recognize that Our Lady and Our Lord will apply the prayers where most needed.

A good place to start is by listing those for whom you have promised to pray and add that you offer these prayers through Mary’s Immaculate Heart.

Another more perfect way to pray would be to offer your Rosary for Our Lady’s intentions. This method of praying shows a confidence in Holy Mary’s intercessory power as well as trust in God’s holy Will.

Fourth Rosary Promise
The rosary will make virtue and good works flourish, and will obtain for souls the most abundant divine mercies. It will draw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
