Rosary During Mass

by Nathan
(Portland, OR)

I always take my Rosary to mass with me. (I am male). I fold the beads between my fingers and hold the crucifix in my hand. I do this when receiving Eucharist as well. When I did it last Sunday, my priest looked at my funny. Is this not OK to do? Should I leave the Rosary at home? Thanks!!

Yes, Bring Your Rosary To Mass
by: The Rosary Team

Now that there is such active verbal and bodily participation in the ordinary form of the Mass, some may look down on having a Rosary at Mass. In years gone by, it seems having a Rosary at Mass was a common practice. In the Extraordinary Form of the Mass (the Traditional Latin Mass), there is a lot more focus on interior prayer, and meditating on the events in Jesus' life would fit in fine, and even be commendable during parts of the Mass.

I would encourage you to keep praying the Rosary and keeping it on you during Mass. Pay attention to what is going on around you especially during the Consecration and the homily.

If you receive Communion on the tongue, there is no reason why you shouldn't carry your Rosary with you up the communion line.

If your priest questions these practices, politely explain the reason you like to have your rosary during Mass. Surely, he will appreciate your piety. If not, maybe you should find somewhere else hear Holy Mass.

Fourth Rosary Promise
The rosary will make virtue and good works flourish, and will obtain for souls the most abundant divine mercies. It will draw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
