Thank you for your response to this woman. It is charitable and truthful. I pray she and her husband see the wisdom of the Church's teaching on this subject. I can sympathize with her, as my husband and I could not conceive a child for more than four years after our marriage. Patience was difficult but finally we were blessed with five children (not all at once!) in the normal way. He is Love and Wisdom and knows better than we. I suggest she and her husband pray the Rosary with deep humility and ask Our Lady to help them accept God's will. They will not regret it.

We are so sorry to hear about your loss. It is very painful for a mother to lose her children. I always think of Our Dear Blessed Mother while holding Jesus after He was taken down from the cross. There can be no greater sorrow. Keep praying your Rosary and stay close to her. She understands your sorrows and sufferings more than you will ever know. It may seem hopeless to couples who are unable to conceive a child naturally. The Church has a special concern for you and others like you. But in her wisdom and love for us her children, Holy Mother Church has forbidden the use of technologies such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF). The main reason for this stance is because these procedures violate the human dignity of the children produced. By its very nature, IVF is a threat to the unity and stability of the family. Furthermore, it removes the marriage act from the procreative act. You can see the downfalls of this procedure by the very fact that the human embryo is treated like a product of technology rather than a gift from Almighty God. The scientific abuses that have taken place due to this so-called technology are severe and have had long reaching consequences, i.e. embryonic stem cells, selective reduction, frozen embryos (children), etc. This will come as unhappy news to you and your husband who are desperate to conceive. We all sympathize with your pain. We strongly encourage you to look further into the Catholic Church's teaching concerning IVF and other reproductive matters. Start by reading Humani Vitae, Donum Vitae, and more specific to IVF and infertility, Pope Benedict XVI's, then Cardinal Ratzinger's Instruction on Respect for Human Life in its Origin and on the Dignity of Procreation Replies to Certain Questions of the Day.
