How Does One Explain To Protestants The Reason For Praying The Rosary For The Deceased?

by Anonymous

After my mom died, my dad married a wonderful Protestant woman. Now he is nearing his final days on this earth. A few years ago, he requested a rosary and funeral Mass upon his death.
How can one explain to Protestants the reason for praying the rosary for the deceased? How can one explain saying a rosary for the deceased to those with no concept of Purgatory?

A Holy And Wholesome Thought
by: The Rosary Team

During this life each person needs to die to self, to be become selfless. This is accomplished by doing things we don't want to do for the love of God. These are called sacrifices. If upon death, a person hasn't died completely to self and yet still in a state of grace, no unconfessed mortal sins, their soul must go to a place of purification before they can enter heaven.

This place of purification is called purgatory. While there, souls can do nothing for themselves but people on earth can help them. This relationship is called the Communion of Saints. People on earth, the Church Militant, can help the souls in Purgatory, the Church Suffering by offering Masses, alms, and prayers.

Catholics pray Rosaries for souls in Purgatory to shorten their time there and hasten their arrival to Heaven.

This teaching of the Church is based in Scripture. In the book of Macabees it reads...

"It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins."

-2 Machabees 12:46

We hope this helps convince your step mother to fulfill your father's wishes when the time comes.

Fourth Rosary Promise
The rosary will make virtue and good works flourish, and will obtain for souls the most abundant divine mercies. It will draw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
